Charles and Tahnya Porter | AGWM Canada missionaries

Charles and Tahnya Porter are no strangers to pioneering ministry. After 25 years of missionary service on three continents, they now serve in French-speaking Quebec—one of the least-reached regions in North America. In Montreal, where fewer than 3% attend evangelical churches, the Porters are working to build the Church by equipping leaders through mentoring, teaching, and strategic coaching.

Charles’s calling began early. As a missionary kid, he felt a call to missions at age 12, which was later affirmed at North Central University. “25 years ago, I said, ‘If you’ll send me, I’ll go.’ And you did.” he says, speaking of the Minnesota District, which has supported them from the beginning.

The Porters’ global ministry has included university outreach, “The Journey,” in Kenya, urban church planting, “Urban Tribes,” in Tanzania, and Muslim ministry in North Africa. Now in Minnesota due to their son Joshua’s medical needs, they maintain an active ministry in Quebec through travel and remote support.

Charles teaches at a Bible school and leads formal mentoring and coaching programs in partnership with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. “We cannot afford to lose a single pastor,” he says. “So, we walk alongside them in structured, intentional ways.”  Fluent in French and English, he also serves as a strategic engagement partner across Quebec.

Their commission is clear: to make disciples who make disciples. While they train young leaders to prepare for ministry, much of their focus is on supporting those already in the harvest field, ensuring pastors continue to grow in their calling.

Montreal’s spiritual needs are staggering: There are 400,000 Arabs, 70,000 Chinese, and 150,000 university students, yet only one full-time university worker. The Porters also lead vision trips for U.S. pastors, inviting them to engage directly with Quebec’s spiritual needs.

“Montreal is a mission field—people just don’t realize it yet,” Charles says. “Thank you, [Minnesota Missions], for sending us to the unexpected places for 25 years.”
